Day 2: Boumalne Dades - Todra Gorges - Merzouga Desert

After a yummy traditional breakfast, we commence the second day of the tour toward the Merzouga desert famous for its golden dunes.

First, a stop will be made in Todra Gorges to stroll in the wall canyons that reach heights of up to 300 meters (984 feet), in addition, it is a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts.

Next, visit the ancient Eyeliner Mines or Kohl Mines which is an age-old eye cosmetic that has been extensively employed in the Middle East, Mediterranean, South Asia, and the Horn of Africa, enhancing the allure of eyes for both men and women and it was believed that it protects from the sunshine.

Furthermore, visit the Khamlia village, located at the edge of the dunes, most of its inhabitants are from sub-Saharan countries such as Mali, Niger, and Sudan performing traditional Gnawa music using unique instruments such as the guembri, drums, and castanets known as clackers.

We spent our first night in a charming riad in the Dades Gorges, enjoying exceptional hospitality and delicious local cuisine. On the second day we visited the beautiful Todra Gorges before heading to Merzouga. Riding camels in the Sahara Desert and watching the sunset over the dunes was a surreal experience, and spending the night in a Berber camp under the stars was unforgettable.
